A trip to Snellsmore Common

A trip to Snellsmore Common

trip to Snellsmore commonWe wanted to make the most of our last day together before Pink and Boo started school, so we took a trip to Snellsmore common, armed with our bug hunting kits to see what adventure we could have.

It was a lovely day, though a little chilly. Pinky and Boo happily packed up their bug kits. First stop was an old rotten tree trunk. Pinky inspected it with her magnifying glass, though she didn’t find very much, it was fascinating to look closely at it.Bug hunting

We enjoyed wandering through the beautiful common, looking at mushrooms and hunting for different colour leaves for an autumn craft project I have in mind. Unfortunately, there weren’t many yet, so we’ll just have to go again in a few weeks time.Mushroom finding

We found a ladybird. Pinky put it in her little bug pot and became obsessed with looking after and gently talking to it. I think she even named it! In the end I said she had to let it go, so we found a nice safe log to set it free and say goodbye.Ladybird find

The girls were jumping around with delight at every pretty leaf they found, until they discovered blackberries! The place was  swarming with blackberry bushes. They then went from delight, to positively ecstatic! We’ve never been blackberry picking before and you would have thought I’d never fed them either. From that moment on, they just wanted to look for blackberries. I told them how they had to be the right colour and to only pick ones from the top, not low down. However, they didn’t really pay attention to where they were picking them from, so, I didn’t really fancy eating them ;)Blackberry picking

After a good walk round we passed a lovely tree for climbing, so I suggested they have a go on their own. They did and I am pleased to say they did it! Pinky and Boo climbed their first tree on their own! They were so pleased with themselves, you can see from the grins on their faces.Tree climbing

They spent the next half an hour climbing up and down the tree, just for the pure fun of it and what a lovely fun achievement! The look on their faces was priceless.Tree climbing fun

I had to eventually bribe them to move on with the promise of lunch!Hanging around

They tried a spot of monkeying around which was quite amusing too.Monkeying around

It was such a lovely walk together in a beautiful place, observing the nature all around us and then having a bit of fun with mother natures playground, the best playground ever!

  1. Ah we love Snelsmore, it’s a great place for a wander (and for getting lost, or is that just my terrible sense of direction?) Glad you had a good last day before school started.

    • Everytime we have been there, we’ve never managed to go very far as the children are so interested in looking at the nature and playing. We must try and get there for a longer walk soon (and maybe get lost too)

  2. A lovely outdoor post with some beautiful shops of the girls on the tree. My.boys love to pick blackberries too but never listen to where to pick them from :-)

    • Ah, glad it’s not just me then ;)

  3. I am slightly in love with your girls! They are so happy and carefree and full of life. Looks like a magical afternoon together. I hope the new term is going well for them at school. Thank you for sharing with me on Country Kids.
