Our new bedtime routine

Our new bedtime routine

For quite some time now bedtime in this house has been deteriorating. It is one of the hardest times of the day, yet it should be the most enjoyable, the chance for you to spend time with your children, reading etc.

My children were always over excited, jumping around, playing very silly noisy games which would mostly result in arguments and tears. Trying to get the children to calm down and get ready for bed was tough, then getting them to calm down to have a nice story together and sleep was even tougher! Sound familiar? I needed to try something new, as our routine was clearly not working anymore. Here’s what I did…..Bedtime/quiet time box

Bedtime/quiet time box

I made up a bedtime/quiet time box containing things like puzzles, paper and pencils, colouring books, fuzzy felt, lacing and sticker books. I put it on the landing for all the children to access. I change the content of the box every so often so they don’t get bored of it.

Next we talked about a new routine together. After dinner was to be a no screen time, children go upstairs and play/ read in their rooms using anything from the bedtime box, or lego. During quiet time the children get ready for bed one by one, then we have story time. Pinky and Boo have lights out at 7pm, while BB has to be in bed by 7pm, but can read on his own until 7.30pm.

For us this new routine seems to be working really well. It has calmed the children down and we are not fighting nearly as much with them to get ready for bed. Daddy and I are now getting some lovely quality play time with them and everything feels so much calmer.

I am loving bedtime again, we get to play together, do lego, puzzles, colour and talk. We have much nicer reading/story time again, which is great for one to one time and BB is liking his half an hour of reading time too, it has really inspired him to enjoy his books.

Obviously it is not all perfect, the children still have their ups and downs, but it feels so much better and manageable, when there are issues, they get resolved quicker. I am loving our new bedtime routine! Our new bedtime routine

  1. Yes, bedtime can be crazy around here, too. Putting the box together is a good idea. It gives them something to focus on instead of “I have to go to bed” πŸ™

    • Yes, it has definitely improved things

  2. I often pull my hair out and cry with despair at bedtime but mainly because my twins insist on sharing a bedroom and then keep each other awake far too late. It’s a great idea having a quiet bedtime box!

    • The box is currently working really well for us πŸ™‚

  3. We haven’t been structured enough with Gwenn’s bedtime. I wouldn’t say we have huge issues with her going to sleep but I think, now that she’s nearing two, it would help to introduce a bit more of a routine. Love the idea of the bedtime box!

    • Thank you, we like our new routine, but routine isn;t for everyone x

  4. Must be crazy with 3 of them. N is pretty crazy before bedtime (unless he’s totally wiped out), but he’s pretty good about going to bed anyway. It’s always good to try something new though, and I like the idea of a bedtime box. The no screen time for us would be a nightmare, because post dinner, that’s when the OH watches the news.

    • I was dreading the screen free time, but I actually really love it now!

  5. This is one of the best ideas for bedtime routines! I love that you imposed the rule about no screen time, just reading and puzzles. It’s a great way to unwind after a long day. Thank you for sharing this fantastic idea.

    • Thank you, it is working really well for us at the moment, we are all enjoying this calmer time together πŸ™‚

  6. A really good idea! I already have the ‘no screentime’ rule after 6PM, but I think I’ll try your bedtime box! πŸ˜€

    • Thanks, we are definitely loving it, hope you do too πŸ™‚

  7. That sounds like a fantastic routine….My girls are thankfully at an age now where they will quietly read in their bedrooms….I could have done with a routine like this a few years ago x

    • Yes, bedtime does improve with age πŸ™‚

  8. It is never easy trying to get into a routine but once you do, it really is one of the best things πŸ™‚ It looks like you have it sorted. Thank you for linking to #PoCoLo x

    • Thanks, I do love a good routine, though I also think the trick is to recognise when it needs changing again as the children grow

  9. I love the idea of a bedtime box, our bedtimes can be a little manic especially if daddy is home from work, they are always much calmer if I am running the show! we read lots of stories while we eat milk and a biscuit to calm the girls and then a quick teeth and bed follows. #pocolo

    • Haha, yes, things are calmer if I’m on my own too!
