Salt Dough Creativity

When we were out for a walk a few weeks ago, my son picked up some ‘clay’ he found and wanted to take it home to model with. I persuaded him we would buy him some proper clay to use. However, I haven’t had a chance to get to the shop to buy some yet, so I suggested we have a go with salt dough for now, so here’s what the children got up to…

Making salt dough

Salt dough recipe

  • 1 Cup Salt
  • 1 Cup Flour
  • ½ Cup Water

Add all the ingredients into a bowl and mix, then kneed for a bit until you have the correct consistency of a dough. Next, have fun creating!

I divided the dough between my three children and let them use their own creativity to do whatever they wanted.

BB tried desperately to make a bowl with his, unfortunately the dough just wasn’t solid enough, but we did manage a bit of a dish.

All the children enjoyed playing around with it, they made shapes using cutters, dishes, a lizard, their name and even a pumpkin.

We baked the salt dough in the oven on grease proof paper at 180 for around 2 hours, depending on the size of the creation.

The next day, we painted them and of course, added some obligatory glitter (they just couldn’t resist a bit of sparkle)!

This was a very popular and simple activity, just like play dough, only the children get to keep their creations, what could be better?! They would also make great keepsake gifts, if you add a hand print.

  1. Such a simple yet effective and cheap way to make a keepsake! And the children have fun at the same time…we’ll definitely be trying this at Christmas time! 🙂 #LetKidsBeKids

  2. My kids still love messing around with salt dough and they are now 8 and 10 – it really is such a great craft 🙂

  3. We must try this again, as last time it just didn’t work for us. I suspect we didn’t bake it for long enough looking at your instructions. Looks a lot of fun!
